An accurate understanding of German noun genders is an important part of constructing grammatically correct sentences. A good grasp of them gives you the skill needed to properly conjugate verbs, adjectives, articles, and more. Regrettably, most of the genders must be learned "auswendig" (by heart); however, there are a couple of helpful tricks you can use if you need to guess. Here are a few common groups that use a male gender (warning - there are exceptions, natürlich):

Male people: der Sohn, der Vater, der Mann, der Bruder

Alcoholic beverages: der Wein, der Wodka, der Whisky | the wine, the vodka, the whiskey

*Careful* - It's "das Bier", a very important word to know if you are visiting Germany.

Seasons: der Frühling, der Winter, der Sommer, der Herbst | the spring, the winter, the summer, the autumn (fall)

Days and months: der Tag, der Monat, der Montag, der März | the day, the month, the Monday, the March
